As planned, T-Systems took over the infrastructure of the global data processing and storage centers, as well as 900 IT specialists. This represents a milestone in the mega outsourcing project.
Outsourcing: Successful start for Shell
The services rendered by T-Systems for Shell are global – and that was exactly the challenge for the transfer of responsibility. The provider of ICT services took over the infrastructure and the employees in the Netherlands, Great Britain, the US, Canada and Malaysia. The transfer was successful: Shell’s five data processing centers are now being operated by T-Systems and 99.2 % of the Shell employees affected by the contract are now employed with the subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. “The high acceptance among the Shell staff showed us that we are on the right track and that our cultures and our people fit together quite well”, says Fritz W. Lorenz. The former head of the data processing centers of Shell himself recently left the company to join T-Systems, where he is responsible for the Sales & Service Management of the Shell account. His colleague, Joe Salinger, Global Account Manager for Shell, emphasizes that T-Systems has decisively improved its global scope with this deal and gained important know-how. “The locations that were taken over during this deal in the US, the Netherlands, the UK and in Malaysia are a steppingstone for further growth in these regions.”
Advantage with Dynamic Services
In the next step, T-Systems will consolidate the server landscape for Shell and relocate most of the SAP services to its own Dynamic Services platform in Munich. The Dynamic Services model was one of the reasons that Shell decided to award T-Systems the contract in March 2008 that amounted to 1 billion euros. The group is now no longer investing in its own complete infrastructure. Instead Shell is now purchasing infractructure services from T-Systems. Therefore, Shell can adjust capacities like bandwidth, SAP or data storage place according to business development, significantly reduce cost and concentrate on the core business. T-Systems is one of the world’s leading providers of Dynamic Services.
